Three axes handle the vast majority of what wood CNC routers do in sign shops, cabinet shops, and furniture making. X, Y, Z: left-right, front-back, up-down. Any shape accessible from directly above can be cut in one setup. That covers signs, cabinet components, furniture panels, and 3D relief carving. The limitation only appears when a surface faces sideways or downward.

A 3-axis CNC wood router controls X, Y, and Z motion with a vertically oriented spindle that always points downward. It cannot approach material from the side or at compound angles without repositioning.
