CNC Router Wood: Materials, Settings, and Results
Wood is the most forgiving CNC material for learning and one of the most demanding for mastery. Every species behaves differently. Grain direction reverses mid-cut and tears the surface without warning. End grain absorbs tool pressure differently than face grain. The settings that cut clean in pine leave burned surfaces in maple if unchanged. Mastering CNC wood cutting means learning to read what the cut is telling you and adjusting before the next pass.
CNC router wood work covers all species: hardwood, softwood, MDF, plywood, and veneered sheet goods. Each requires specific bit geometry, chip load, and depth settings.
Material Reference
MDF: Most consistent CNC material. Uniform density, no grain. Very abrasive to bits. HEPA dust collection required.
- Settings: 100-120 IPM, 18,000 RPM, 0.25-inch depth with 1/4-inch upcut.
Pine/softwood: Cuts cleanly with high chip load. Tearout at grain reversals if feed rate too low.
- Settings: 100-130 IPM, 18,000 RPM, 0.25-inch depth.
Oak/hard maple: Demands correct chip load. Too slow = burning. Correct = clean.
- Settings: 80-100 IPM, 18,000 RPM, 0.125-inch depth per pass.
Plywood: Use compression spiral for clean faces on both sides.
- Settings: 90-110 IPM, 18,000 RPM, 0.25-inch depth minimum for compression engagement.
Veneered sheet: Compression spiral mandatory. Upcut tears veneer face; downcut tears veneer back.

FAQ
What CNC router settings for oak? 80-100 IPM, 18,000 RPM, 0.125-inch depth per pass with 1/4-inch two-flute upcut.
Why does my CNC router burn wood? Chip load too low: increase feed rate first. Then check bit sharpness. Dull bits burn at any chip load.
What is the best bit for MDF on a CNC router? 1/4-inch two-flute upcut. The Whiteside RU2100. Use a dust shoe and HEPA filter.
