CNC Wood Router Table: Spoilboard and Workholding Setup

The first sign of a poorly configured CNC table is inconsistent pocket depth. One corner measures 0.24 inches, the opposite 0.17 inches. The machine is working correctly. The spoilboard is not flat relative to the machine travel plane, and every cut inherits that variance until the problem is addressed. The fix is a 15-minute surfacing operation.

A CNC wood router table refers both to the machine platform and to the spoilboard and workholding system that supports the workpiece.

Spoilboard Setup

A spoilboard is a sacrificial MDF layer the workpiece rests on. Surface it before any precision work:

  1. Install a 0.75 to 1.25-inch flat surfacing bit
  2. Set depth at 0.010 to 0.020 inches
  3. Run a raster toolpath covering the full working area
  4. Result: a surface geometrically flat to the machine motion plane

Resurface when pocket depth inconsistency appears, after significant through-cut damage, or when visible high and low spots develop.

Workholding Options

T-track clamps: Most flexible system. Standard on Genmitsu 4040-PRO MAX and FoxAlien Masuter Pro. Adjustable for varied workpiece sizes.

Carpet tape: Fast for thin flat material. No clamps in toolpaths. Sufficient for light cutting forces.

Vacuum hold-down: Production standard for full-sheet sheet goods. No mechanical clamps in toolpaths.

Toe clamps: Low-profile for thick stock where standard clamps would enter the toolpath.

Table Rigidity

Desktop machines on lightweight tables transmit vibration as visible chatter in cuts. A torsion-box workbench top on a rigid frame reduces this substantially.
