The spindle is the only component the wood actually touches. Every other decision in the CNC setup configuration serves this moment. The choice between a trim router and a VFD spindle is not about which is technically superior in isolation. It is about which is appropriate for how the machine will actually be used.

A CNC router spindle is the motor and chuck assembly that holds and rotates the cutting bit. Two configurations dominate: trim routers adapted for CNC, and purpose-built VFD spindles.

Trim Routers

Makita RT0701C - 10,000 to 30,000 RPM, manual speed dial, 65mm body, 1/4-inch collet. The community standard. Brushed motor needs brush replacement at 100-200 hours. Speed is set manually.

DeWalt DWP611 - comparable RPM range, similar performance profile. Some users prefer the DWP611 for slightly different low-end torque characteristics.

Who should skip trim routers: anyone running more than 20 hours per week, anyone needing G-code RPM control.

VFD Spindles

AC induction motor plus variable frequency drive. RPM commanded by G-code. Brushless for longer service life. Quieter under load. Better low-RPM torque for larger diameter bits.

Honest trade-offs: heavier, more complex electrical, higher upfront cost, requires 220V for most 2.2kW configurations.

Collet Standards

  • 1/4-inch: native to all trim routers
  • 1/8-inch: reduction collet insert on trim routers; native on ER11 VFD spindles
  • ER11: accepts 1-7mm shanks
  • ER20: accepts up to 13mm (1/4-inch and larger)

When to Upgrade

Start with a trim router. Upgrade to VFD when running more than 15 hours per week consistently, when G-code speed control matters, or when noise is a real constraint.
