Every time someone discovers what a CNC router actually does, there is a moment of genuine surprise. Not because the technology is complex, but because the result is so specific: the machine cuts exactly what the file says, every time, without the variation that comes from holding a tool in a human hand. That repeatability is the entire point.

A CNC router is a computer-controlled machine that uses a rotating bit to cut, carve, engrave, and profile flat and three-dimensional material. CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control. The machine follows coordinates specified in G-code, generated by CAM software from a design file.

How It Works

The design exists in a file: a vector drawing, a 3D model, or a scanned image. CAM software converts the design into toolpaths and exports G-code. A G-code sender communicates those instructions to the machine controller, which drives stepper or servo motors on X, Y, and Z axes. The spindle rotates the bit at 10,000-30,000 RPM. The machine moves the bit through the toolpath at the programmed feed rate.

The result is a physical object that matches the digital file.
