CNC Routing: How the Process Works and How to Begin

The most important thing to understand about CNC routing is that the machine executes instructions. It does not evaluate them. A wrong depth setting at 18,000 RPM executes precisely and at full speed. The entire learning curve of CNC routing is building the judgment to create correct instructions before the machine starts.

CNC routing is the process of using a computer-controlled machine to cut, carve, engrave, and profile material using a rotating bit following digital toolpaths generated from a design file.

The Five-Step Workflow

  1. Design the shape in CAD software (Inkscape for 2D, Fusion 360 for 3D)
  2. Generate toolpaths in CAM software (VCarve Desktop, Carbide Create)
  3. Export G-code with the correct post-processor for your controller
  4. Set up the machine: install bit, secure workpiece, set X/Y/Z zero
  5. Send and run via G-code sender (gSender, Carbide Motion)

Core Concepts

Chip load: Feed Rate divided by RPM times flutes. The foundational cutting variable. Too low = rubbing, heat, and dulled bit. Too high = deflection and bit breakage.

Depth of cut per pass: Start at 50% of bit diameter. Multiple conservative passes produce better surface finish than one aggressive pass.

Workholding: A workpiece that moves during a cut ruins the entire job. T-track clamps, carpet tape, and tabs in through-cuts are the standard solutions.
